GOT a tubby tabby? Dry food is to blame, according to New Zealand scientists.
Just like their owners, cats will overindulge if there’s plenty to eat and new research into cat food suggests popular dry food may be the reason felines get fat.
The study of 16 cats at Massey University found those fed only dry food got plumper, but lost weight when they switched to wet or canned food.
The findings are no surprise to Australian Small Animal Veterinary Association president Matthew Retchford, who said dry food has four times the calories of canned food.
“It’s like an explosion of calories because wet canned food contains up to 80 per cent water where dry food only contains 20 per cent water,” he said.
“One cooking cup equals about 100g of dry food totalling 300 to 400 calories, but the same weight of canned food only has 70 to 100 calories.”
A king-size Mars Bar has about 360 calories.
